Chana Dal(Begalgram Dal) – 1 cup
Jaggery – 1 cup (you can also use Sugar – 1 cup)
Refined Flour – 1 cup
A pinch of turmeric powder
Cardamoms – 2 cloves
Ghee (as needed)
Oil (as needed)
Cook chana dal in water till soft and dry. Grind the chana dal into a fine paste. Melt jiggery(or make sugar syrup if you are using sugar) and add the chana dal paste to it allow it to cook well till it becomes soft. Add cardamom powder to it.
Now sieve the flour and add a pinch of turmeric powder. Make the flour into soft dough with oil and water and leave it aside for about an hour.
Make small balls out of the chana dal-jaggery dough. Take a small ball of the flour dough and roll out into a thin round like chapatti. Now place the jiggery mix ball in the centre of the rolled out flour dough and fold into a ball and again roll it into circular shape. This is called poli.
Make hot a griddle and place the rolled out poli on for cooking by rubbing a little ghee on both sides of the poli.
Now the poli is ready for consuming. You can have it hot with ghee. If you are storing it in a fridge then remove it and bring it to the room temperature before consuming.
You can also add scraped coconut with the jiggery and chana dal paste. While this will add taste to the poli but the shelf life of coconut poli is short.
